Sikkim shares international borders with China, Bhutan, and Nepal. Due to its strategic location and security importance, certain regions in the state require special permits for travelers.

1. Guidelines for Indian Nationals

Indian tourists do not require any permit to enter Sikkim or visit common tourist destinations such as Gangtok, Pelling, Ravangla, and Namchi.

However, if you plan to visit border or high-altitude regions, a Protected Area Permit (PAP) is mandatory.

  • East Sikkim: Tsomgo (Changu) Lake, Baba Mandir, Nathula Pass, Zuluk (Old Silk Route)

  • PAN Card is NOT accepted as valid ID proof in Sikkim.
  • Aadhaar Card may be rejected at some army or police checkposts.

Additionally, every traveler must carry 4–5 recent passport-size photographs. These are required for permit copies at multiple checkposts.

2. Guidelines for Foreign Nationals (Non-Indians)

Foreign tourists must obtain a Restricted Area Permit (RAP), also known as the Inner Line Permit, to enter Sikkim.

How to Obtain RAP

RAP is issued free of cost at the Sikkim entry points such as Rangpo or Melli checkposts. The permit is issued on arrival.

Protected Area Permit (PAP)

If a foreign tourist wishes to visit North Sikkim (Lachung / Yumthang Valley) or Tsomgo Lake, an additional Protected Area Permit is required.

  • Foreign nationals cannot travel solo in protected areas
  • Minimum group size: 2 or more foreign tourists

  • Nathula Pass – Not Allowed
  • Gurudongmar Lake – Not Allowed
  • Baba Mandir – Not Allowed

3. Special Note on Nathula Pass
